fun fact: the first american newspaper to explicitly speak out against homophobia was a Black communist newspaper
The Awl, 1844 (four years before the Communist Manifesto was printed)
The Awl was the militant newspaper of the Lynn, Massachusetts shoeworkers, named after a tool of the craft.(via kropotkitten)
The division of society into the producing and the non-producing classes, and the fact of the unequal distribution of value between the two, introduces us at once to another distinction—that of capital and labour… . labour now becomes a commodity… . Antagonism and opposition of interest is introduced in the community; capital and labour stand opposed.
Yooooooo, I need money, and I fancy myself a pretty rad writerrrrr. So, if you need anything written, let me knowwwww.
I get this question a lot and every time I give a slightly different answer.
When I first when straight edge back in 2010 it was because I was sick of drunk people, drinking culture and the effect alcohol was having on me. I went straight edge for mainly personal reasons but quickly attached a moralistic, semi-political aspect to it to try and justify it to myself and my friends.
Later on, as I settled in to not drinking, I began to feel more comfortable around people who still drank and dropped the moralistic approach. I was introduced to the political aspect of straight edge by the Crimethinc. pamphlet “Anarchy & Alcohol”. That really cemented my belief in straight edge for political reasons, though for slightly the wrong ones.
About a year or so ago I read “Sober Living For The Revolution: Hardcore Punk, Straight Edge and Radical Politics" which reignited my love for straight edge. It included the pamphlet "Towards A Less Fucked Up World" which, in my opinion, is one of the best texts written on straight edge and radical politics. That really hit the nail on the head for me, and I think that really helped me define what straight edge meant to me.
So, to answer your question, I am straight edge mainly for personal reasons: Because I do not like the effect alcohol or other drugs has on my body or my state of mind. But on top of that there is also a political aspect to my sobriety that on one hand rejects drinking culture and its place in supporting rape culture and patriarchy and on the other can see the numbing effect it has radical politics and how drugs have been used historically to destroy revolutionary movements.
I think I’ve rambled on enough now, I’ll leave it at that for now!
On March 8th, Showan, a well-known antifascist campaigner in the Swedish city of Malmo, was stabbed in the head in an attacked linked to Nazi groups. He is currently in a coma and fighting for his life.
A large demonstration was held in his honor yesterday, attended by thousands, including several players and staff at Malmo FC, of whom he is an avid supporter, and where he has been involved in campaigning against homophobia and racism. The rally was both to support Showan and to demonstrate that Nazis will not be tolerated on the streets.
Get well Showan! :(
